It is the major baroque fountain in Rome. It is around 25.9 meters (85 feet) high and’.8 meters (65 feet) wide. It is a distinctive example of art with fantastic creatures personified on it. The fountain is the terminal part of the Vergine aqueduct built by Agrippa, a general of Augustus, in’ B.C. to bring the water coming from the Salone springs to Rome. The construction of this fountain was started in 1732 and it was finally completed in 1762.

This sculpture is an ancient piece of work. Its origins go back to Roman times. In the year–85, Pope Nicholas V commissioned Gianlorenzo Bernini to generate the actual fountain, but the project was dumped after the death of Pope Urban VIII in 1644. In eighteenth century, Pope Clement XII decided to restore the Trevi district and began work on the fountain. It took around 3 centuries to complete this monument. Pope Clement XII commissioned Nicola Salvi to create a large fountain at the Trevi Square. The Roman architect, Nicola Salvi, took twenty years to complete it.

The fountain is situated at the junction of three roads. It is at the ending part of the revivified Aqua Virgo, one of the ancient aqueducts that supplied water to ancient Rome. This Aqua Virgo led the water into the Baths of Agrippa. It served Rome for more than four hundred years. Although the water is no longer safe to drink, the fountain is still a popular place to visit and enjoy an ice cream.
