There are many different types of Water Fountain Pumps.  Most pumps are plugged into an electrical source, while there are also solar powered units available which only need the sun to provide power.

The simplicity of Water Fountain Pumps never stops amazing me.  They simply pump water through a plastic tube into a nozzle, which produces the fountain.  The fountain water then returns to the pool below, and the Water Fountain Pump once again pumps it though the tubing back into the nozzle.

Usually Water Fountain Pumps sit in the bottom of the pool or pond, although some models are floating.  The pump will gather water from the water source and pump it to the fountain nozzle.  You should take care in choosing the correct pump.  Make note of the gallons per hour that will be pumped, as well as the lift – or height – of the fountain it will produce.

Depending on the size of the fountain you want, you’ll choose a Water Fountain Pump somewhere between 35 and 600 gallons per hour, or GPH.  Make sure that you choose the appropriate size pump.  It might not be better to have the biggest pump that you can buy.

Lower gph will give you a nice and quiet gurgling effect. Water fountain pumps with higher gph will give you a steady stream spurted out of a nozzle and give you a splash. It will be up to you to decide on what you want. You just need to make sure that it is within the range that is allowed for your fountains size.
