What Are Your Thoughts On This Goldfish Pond?
We live in South Georgia and have a pond in our backyard that is approx. 100 ft x 50 ft x 5 ft deep. Right now it has channel catfish and bream. We have dug a canal from corner of this pond that is about 12 ft x 3 ft x 3 ft deep and have a bridge over this stream. There is mesh wire under the bridge to be bottom of the stream so that the catfish/bream cannot get into the canal. We pump well water into the pond via a fountain head a few times a week to keep it full. We want to put goldfish and koi into the canal. Will this work? We were hoping that we could transfer the goldfish and koi into the big pond once they started to outgrow the canal. Would that be ok? The biggest catfish in the big pond are about 12 inches at most. Also, there is no type of filtration on the pond other than the fountain but we do want to build a simple waterfall (without a filtration system) at the end of the canal. What do you think of this setup and do you think it will support the goldfish and koi long term? I want them to grow big! How big do you think they will get in this type enviroment?
Thanks!

What you are doing sound great. If you wait till the Koi get to large size before you introduce them to the pond they will be fine. The catfish will in the future eat the new baby Koi. You can expect you Koi to get to 2-3 foot in size maybe bigger.
I think it will work. I built a Koi pond for my mother in law that also had gold fish its about 50X20 it has a filtration system in it, but she has had it for 6 years. After few years she wanted to get rid of the gold fish and some of the koi cause she to many so I got them and took them down to the big pond which is about 100×200 feet with no filtation just a old dirty pond about 5 feed deep, and I go down to the pond and fish sometime when I get a chance to catch catfish and perch. I see the gold fish some times they are about 12″ long and I see some of the koi but they have not been there as long and most are black so they would be hard to see in the dirty water. I hope to one day maybe catch them with my pole. Good luck hope it works for you!
