Should I Cut The Pond Fountain Off During A Hard Freeze?
Okay, this is what happened. Last night, the fountain in the pond went askew. Well have the water was sprayed out of the pond in the process. I took a broom to knock the detachable fountain spray into the pond, the whole thing collapse and i found the water level is about 1/3 full. So should i turn off the pumps, or leave them running tonight. If i leave the water level, as it is, the whole thing will freeze tonight I’m sure.
Sorry about the ignorance, We don’t normally get this cold here. Well, not since i’ve had this pond.

I don’t think shutting off is a good idea because circulation will prevent freezing. If the pond is decorative without any fish or frogs in it you could add some antifreeze but if it has them in the water or is open to other animals that idea could be fatal to them. Another thought is to buy one of those tank trough heaters that farmers use in cold climates to let outdoor farm animals have access to water for drinking without fear of the trough freezing over. It is a sealed can with a small electric heater built in that you plug in and drop into the water to keep it above freezing.
as the others have said if you have fish or others in it dont turn off as pipe will freeze and cause pipes to bust. if you want to turn off drain pipe and pump of any water as water when it freezes it expands this is what causes pipe to break then you have a big repair bill
If you have fish, you need to leave the fountain running to aerate the pond.
Unless it is going to be a hard long freeze, leave it running.

GOOD LUCK!
It’s -15 here, and I ALWAYS leave my pumps running. Never with the fountain, though. I have 2 ponds, and the surface of both is only 30% covered with a skim of ice.
empty the water and close the pumps, otherwise the water might freeze in the pumps
I think turning off the water will cause your pipes to freeze and possibly burst with the water that’s left in them.
you want to be carefull about bursting the pipes, once that happens its a pain in the butt to fix it.
