Is This An Ok Environment For African Dwarf Frogs??
Hi I was thinking about getting some African Dwarf Frogs. My mom keeps complaing about how its not right ot keep those frogs cooped up in small little bowls and tanks. So I wasthinking I’d buy this nice fountain and put them in there. Its small ground level about 2 and a half feet high and has little ledges where wATER POURS down, its base is about the size of a small stove top. I was wondering if its ok to keep them in there instead, and insteado f hooking up the water pumps etc I’d just put a few water snails in there, some plants, and jsut change the water every week or so, and plant some flowers on the ledges and keep a netting over the thing so the frogs wouldn’t beable to get out and so cats can’t get them.

It’s best to keep your frogs in an aquarium like you would keep tropical fish in. They are completely aquatic, so they don’t need any rocks to climb out of the water on. They should have water at least one foot deep, and it should be filtered. They also need to have their water heated slightly, to about 82F. They are capable of jumping out of their aquariums, so make sure yours has a lid. Even though this sounds complex, once everything is set up, they are very easy to care for. I have 4 African Dwarfs that I keep in a 50 gallon tank with guppies, and they’re doing very well. If you only have the frogs in the tank, you won’t need to clean it too often; once every 4-6 weeks should suffice. If you put a small algae eater in with them, it will keep the tank even cleaner.
Well, you’d have to be absolutely sure the cats wouldn’t be playing around in there. It’s hard to keep cats out of neat fountains like that. Also, the African Dwarf Frogs can jump out of the water if they get scared. ADFs don’t mind small tanks. They are tiny frogs. As long as they have a few places to hide (nice little caves and toys in the tank), they are happy. They don’t expect much.
Also, you need to use spring water for the frogs; they can’t tolerate the chlorine in city water. So you’ll have to consider how much water you’d have to buy to fill that fountain for them.
Above all things, though, be sure you can keep them safe from the cats. Have fun.
I have African Dwarf frogs too. I have three but i’ve had one for a year and two i think have died. I think that would be perfect. My frogs aren’t really in that big of an aread but i think what your talking about would work. Make sure to take care of them though. My mom says the same thing, but she ends up cleaning, feeding, and taking care of them.
