I Need To Know How To Clean Up A 50×100 Foot Pond.?

i am not sure how deep it is but, it is large. too large to drain. It may have a natural cool water spring in the middle and estimated 35 feet deep. I ‘t has never been taken care of and i am just starting. i would like to get a fountain pump for the middle but, i need landscaping ideas, pump sizes and to clean up the water. how can i tell if there is a natural spring???

Sounds about twice the size of my pond. 3 possibilities – It could be spring fed or it could just be at the water table line or the soil could be clay and the rain water never drains. If water table issue then the surrounding soil might have an iron orange tinge to it. If it is clay then the soil around it will be hard and clay like and easily hold water. If it is spring fed does it freeze in the winter? Strong spring ponds won’t totally freeze or if they do it will be thin ice. Rent or buy a blow up boat and use a pole to probe the depths of the pond. About the pump, if you only want a fountain then I would just buy a fountain pump and the strength of it will determine on how high you want it to spray. I assume you have a power outlet with a POWER BREAKER FUSE by the pond. As far as cleaning the water I am not sure what you mean by ‘clean’. Is it dirty? Have algae? covered in scum? All these are different answers. I have a 5000 GPH pond pump in mine feeding into a side living water plant area that then falls back into the pond via a stream – all coated with live plants like iris, parrots feather, zebra reed grass, pickerel rush, water ferns and more. The plants clean the water and the movement aerates the water. I pump the water into this area and it flows back into the pond. If the pond water is green or covered in green duck weed that means too much stuff that plans love. Thus you need to purchase some underwater plants and pond lilies to put in the pond to shade the pond surface and to use the nutrients. Plants will take years to get established though so for the size of your pond don’t expect results within 5 years unless you want to spend a lot on pond plants. I have spent about $400 on plants and after 4 years our new pond is finally looking like it has plant growth in it. If you have scum then the pond is dead and using my plant filter idea along with planting plants will solve that issue. If the pond is dead do a pond water test (from any pond garden center) and check to insure that things like pesticides, fertilizers and such are not getting anywhere near the pond – especially from rain runoff. This will also tell you the water quality. Any fish? If not and the pond is healthy you can introduce them to it. In our case about 2 dozen .99 goldfish at Wal-Mart has reproduced into 40+ and 4 dozen minnows at the bait shop is now 20,000+ minnows. With this expect visitors like herons and other fish hunters. Landscaping? Anything goes with some rules. Landscape around and control water runoff. In other words when it rains how does the water flow into your pond? You don’t want you landscaping to be washed into the pond. Trees? Keep in mind two things. Roots can grow into the pond and are twice the height of the tree. Leaves. Leaves fall into the pond and lead to the ‘too much nutrient’ problem I talked about above. Are you up for all this and more? I could go on………………
if it isn’t stream fed it must be a spring either that or it’s your sess pool.
