it works by gravity, on the principle of a “U” tube. He piped water from a source at the same height as he wanted the water to squirt. If a stream continually fills the source the fountain will work forever, or until a drought occurs.
You can try this with a plastic tube and a funnel. Attach the funnel to a stand and connect the tube to the bottom of the funnel. Keep the other end of the tube level with the top of the funnel and fill the funnel with water. Now lower the end of the tube, keeping it pointed upwards, and the water will squirt to the height of the water in the funnel then decrease until the water in the plastic tube is level with the end you are holding. If someone keeps filling the funnel to a fixed level, the water will keep squirting up to match the water level in the funnel.
This is a good experiment for early years physics class.
