Can Anyone Recommend A Cheap, Non-toxic (to Humans) Biocide That Won’t React With Copper?

I have an indoor fountain that is made of copper. I would like to inhibit bateria and algae growth in the water, but don’t want to corrode the copper (or the ABS pump or PVC fittings). Does anyone have any suggestions?

Chewing tobacco, seriosly. Get a can of cheap unflavored chewing tobacco, and basically make a tea bag out of something likr cheesecloth, and just let it mellow in the water for an hour.
