There are many different types of Water Fountain Pumps.  Most pumps are plugged into an electrical source, while there are also solar powered units available which only need the sun to provide power.

The simplicity of Water Fountain Pumps never stops amazing me.  They simply pump water through a plastic tube into a nozzle, which produces the fountain.  The fountain water then returns to the pool below, and the Water Fountain Pump once again pumps it though the tubing back into the nozzle.

Usually Water Fountain Pumps sit in the bottom of the pool or pond, although some models are floating.  The pump will gather water from the water source and pump it to the fountain nozzle.  You should take care in choosing the correct pump.  Make note of the gallons per hour that will be pumped, as well as the lift – or height – of the fountain it will produce.

Depending on the size of the fountain you want, you’ll choose a Water Fountain Pump somewhere between 35 and 600 gallons per hour, or GPH.  Make sure that you choose the appropriate size pump.  It might not be better to have the biggest pump that you can buy.

Lower gph will give you a nice and quiet gurgling effect. Water fountain pumps with higher gph will give you a steady stream spurted out of a nozzle and give you a splash. It will be up to you to decide on what you want. You just need to make sure that it is within the range that is allowed for your fountains size.

What Size Water Fountain Pump Do I Need?

There are so many different types of Water Fountain Pumps available, and choosing the right one can sometimes be a little big confusing. The first thing that you need to do is to determine the the correct size of the Water Fountain Pump that you need.

Since the majority of pumps are electrical rather than solar powered, you’ll need to make sure that there’s an electrical outlet nearby. You should also make sure that the electrical supply has a GFI, or ground fault interrupter for safety. This will cut off the power in case the wiring should come into contact with the water.

Water fountain pumps can be either external or submersible. If you are going to using the pump for a small pond, for example, the submersible pump would probably be a better choice.

Water fountain pumps are supplied in gallons per hour output. The very large pumps will be rated in horsepower rather than GPH, so you’ll need to determine how many gallons per hour you want to move to create our fountain.

To help make a determination of what size pump you need, measure the size of the body of water that you want to move, and decide how large you want the water fountain to be. Most manufacturers will provide charts for you to use to determine exactly what size Water Fountain Pump that you need.
